Angry Mandrake install difficulties

Ok, I have Mandrake 8.1 that I installed as a stand alone system on a pc 6 gig,320 ram, celeron 500. I managed to get it installed and running but couldn't get it to recognize the printer or modem. I repeatedly tried new installs and eventually figured out the printer problem but at the expense of being able to boot. Mandrake now recognizes my printer but I get this message when I try to boot, LDM: Unable to read partition table. and Kernal Panic : VFA : Unable to mount root fs on 3:01. I believe this is a partitioning problem and have tried repartitioning and reformatting 3 times to no avail. I need to know what an ideal stand alone mandrake partition should look like and whether or not this is the most likely problem. Please help!
