mandrake gui advantage
 

hellow to everyone , I am a newbie when it comes to linux anyway I am a college student and I was asked to research on the advantages of the mandrake gui over the other distros can I get your comments on this. It would be really helpfull thanks.....

Well.......I don't quite get what you mean by "Mandrake gui". Are you talking about mandrake's config tools, like drakconf and rpmdrake and hardrake and all that kind of stuff? If so, the main advantage is in ease of use. These are some of the easiest tools I've seen. Rpmdrake, which is a front end to urpmi, is great. It makes grabbing software of the cds a breeze, no dependencies, no hassle. On the other hand though, this isn't to say that other distros don't have great package management, like apt-get for debian, emerge for gentoo, yast, and my favorite the ports tree in bsd (not linux). For reiteration, the ease of use factor is the best thing the mandrake configuration tools have going for them.

You may be talking about Window Managers. Essentially (which is one of the beauties of linux), there is no "<distro> GUI." Mandrake simply supplies the backbone, you can have practically any "GUI/front-end/window manager/etc." you wish.

The two most common are:

• KDE
• Gnome

However, Fluxbox and Blackbox happen to be my favorite.

My 9c worth. Mandrakes Control center is good. Harddrake and Softdrake and their documentation is a solid 8 out of 10. Redhats (don't know if Fedora has centralized yet) 47 distinct and randomly accessed under 7 subcategories in the start GUI, while functionally good, only get a 5 out of 10 for being hard to find use. redhat-config-xf86 gets a 0 out of 10, dragging the whole rating down. How can you have a GUI for configuring/recovering X sessions that won't start without a valid X and offers NO TEST option, letting the user happily corrupt their X settings to enjoy on next boot.

(Note: Used Redhat 6.1, 7.0, 8.0 for 4 years).

Suse-->Yast, awesome. Give it a 9.5 out of 10. Only drawbacks I can see, new pages take a while to load, and Firewall configuration is basic, you can't add any rules for blocking/stealth. You can open more ports, but not stealth. I will probably go with Guard Dog again.

Can't talk about config GUIs on other distros, not enough experience. As for the rest of the software, KDE is basically KDE, Gnome is Gnome, OpenOffice is Openoffice, k3b is k3b, ... no matter what Linux you run.

You're best bet to find out about Mandrake is to use it. Then you'll know for yourself the advantages (if you think there are any) of using Mandrake.
