Mandrake 9.0 No Video

I upgraded (actually did a clean Full install) From 8.2 to 9.0. With 8.2 I have no problem getting video. With 9.0 I tried the exact same settings with X config and even tested other settings and I still get a blank screen on the "Can you see this" Screen. and When I boot up it boots fine and tries to go to X and once again Blank screen. Once again I had NO Problems with 8.2 with the SAME SETTINGS. I installed RH 8.0 just to see if it would work ok and it did. I would rather have Mandrake 9.0 thou.

First off, what do you mean by a "blank screen"?

If your X server is config'ed properly, but you aren't running a Window manager (basically telling X what to do), then you will get a blank screen of sorts.

Do you get a mouse cursor?

Assuming that you get a mouse cursor...

What does your .xinitrc file look like?

Here's a sample:

Blank Screen, I mean it flickers for a second and it's like the monitor is off. This happens during the "Configure X" section of the install where the "test Screen" is suppose to come up.

Ugh. Okay, so it's a XF86Config/Xserver issue...

Basically (I think) your XF86Config is trying to use a setting that is incompatible with your video card/monitor.

What would be nice is if you still had your old XF86Config file laying around (these should be saved from installation to installation). You could try that out on the newer install (it should work with no problems). Failing that, the XF86Config file from Redhat should work as well.

Did you try configuring your monitor with lower settings? These can always be "tweaked" at runtime.

And ATI used to be known as a PITA to setup, but this should be ancient history...

What's more likely the case is that your IBM monitor is not setup properly. Here's the settings for your monitor:

IBM; IBM 2235 C50; IBM08BB; 30.0-54.0; 50.0-120.0

The really important numbers are the last ones. These are the monitors horizontal and vertical sync.

These have to be correct in your XF86Config file.

From the (http://www.mit.edu/afs/sipb/system/r...tor/MonitorsDB) link:
#
# Monitor information for use by Xconfigurator
# Supplies similar information to the data in the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Cards
# file about video cards.
#
# Each line has format:
# <Manufacturer>; <Monitor name>; <EISA ID (if any)>; <horiz sync in Khz>; <verc sync in Hz>
#
# Horiz and vert sync can be a range; like 35.2-55.75; or 31.5,35.5
# BUT remember to use ';' to separate fields
#

What's odd is that your c50 monitor appears to have been around from at least the Redhat 6.2 days. Maybe it got depreciated from the monitor DB?

Maybe a good excuse for a new 19" monitor? :)

Post your XF86Config & XF86Config4 files please.

So much rambling, so little time... :)

Similar Happened to me....

I had very similar problems with my ATI Rage Pro IIC card &
GVISION L7EH monitor. Tried all kinds of manual settings for both n the Xf86config, with no luck. Finally reinstalled Mandrake 9.0 and tweaked the settings again. This time used XFREE 3.2.X and it worked.
Apparently didn't like the new XFREE 4.X.X ???

Don't quote me on this, but I kinda-sorta think that you should now be able to install Xfree86 v4.x.x and then use the monitor information from your Xfree68 3.2.x config file to make 4.x.x work.

Regardless, be sure to back this file up in a very safe place. Especially since you have had this much trouble getting it to work.
