Mandrake 9.0 and KDE 3.1 problem
 

I have stable Mandrake 9.0 distibution and today I updated KDE to version 3.1 from ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/dist...drake/9.0/rpms cause I'm not a member of Mandrake Club. When I start X everything is normal except KDesktop - it won't load... After a few minutes of KDE running I get KDesktop error: "Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: Too many open files". I have no idea what that means. Please help :newbie:

Sorry I can't help but I am a relative newbie and I did the same, from the same site, and it works fine. You may have unsatisfied dependencies.

Dunno about not being a member of Mandrake club, I don't think that Mandrake has officially done the upgrade yet. Last time I looked it was not at www.kde.org for Mandrake either.

How did you perform your upgrade? I downloaded the files to my hard drive, Opened KPackage and dragged and dropped the RPMs into it from Konqueror. Then I did a test installation and found a few dependencies, and downloaded a files necessary to install the program files (as opposed to the developer files). Then and only then I did the actual installation. I'll catch up with the developer files when they become part of the official Mandrake software upgrade.

I have made so many cockups in the 2-3 months I have been playing with Mandrake 9.0 that I have had to reload about 5 times. But I learned some lessons on the way.

Now I have downloaded two floppy disc images from Partition Image so I can boot up my computer from a floppy and run Partition Image. Then back up my Linux partition to an image file on my Windows partition. Hopefully next time it goes pear shaped I won't have to start from scratch.

I used Mandrake's Software Installer:
First i added ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/dist...drake/9.0/rpms to "Software Sources Manager" (Configuration->Packaging->Software Sources Manager) and then i used "Install Software" program to install everything under "Graphical Enviroment -> KDE Workstation" that includes words "kde" and "3.1".

Tell me how did you calculated dependencies, please.

One of the lessons I learnt was be careful with Software Sources Manager! Unless a site has a file called hdlist.cz in the parent directory or in another directory off the parent directory (usually ../hdlist.cz or ../base/hdlist.cz) then I am wary of using it. I downloaded all the files to a directory on my drive, ran KPackage and Konqueror, selected all the .rpm files and dragged them to KPackage. Another window opens in KPackage for some reason at this point (cos you're not ready yet) so I closed it. I then selected each rpm in turn in KPackage and you can see dependencies in the right hand window, but it's a bit fiddly. So I checked everything and clicked install. The second window appeared, and there are check boxes for "Test (Do not Install)" and "Check Dependencies". I checked them, then clicked the Install button.

At this point you get an error report, which lists all the dependencies. So you leave out any selections you don't really need (development tools for example) and try again. You search the net and download dependent files and also drag and drop them into KPackage, and try again, until you get an error report '0'.

Once this is done, you can uncheck Test, check other boxes as indicated, and click on install.

Since I did that first time I had a problem with RPMdrake/urpmi(Software Sources Manager, Software Update etc) which meant I had to reload from scratch. I had kept the rpms for KDE3.1, but the latest Linux Format had KDE3.1 including Mandrake rpms on the cover disk. I actually tried that first, but there were so many dependencies (including Mandrake 9.1 beta files) that I used the 'ibiblio' set in the end.

As I said, get Partition Image on 2 floppy disks (www.partimage.org I think), reload Mandrake, but once you have the initial setup done, with all the official updates, use Partition Image to archive it. Then if anything goes wrong, you can restore the archive rather than having to go from scratch. You can always do an archive before trying anything that might mess up your Mandrake installation.

The ftp I mentioned had hdlist.cz file and I wrote the correct path to Software Sources Manager. It looks like I'm still missing some dependencies. I'll do a clean install of Mandrake 9.0 and try again with your procedure - manual download...

You don't have to be part of the mandrake club to download anything from the officials ftp sites.
They ask that to you without forcing anyone.
Go in the main site and see by yoursef...

I want to do download KDE 3.1 RPMs for Mandrake 9.0. These packets are available for Mandrake Club members from this site http://www.mandrakeclub.com/modules....d_page&RID=201. I wasn't able to find these RPMs on any FTP or anywhere else.

The files I had to download from elsewhere to get KDE to load properly were:

Mesa-common-3.3-14.1mdk.i586.rpm
htdig-3.2.0-0.5mdk.i586.rpm

I just looked again at the ibiblio site again and saw hdlist.cz which I must admit I didn't spot earlier. They normally put it in a different directory.

Try this:
ftp://sunsite.mff.cuni.cz/OS/Linux/D.../Mandrake/RPMS
and look around...
