Question mandrake 8.1 installation headache

im totally new to linux. i went to linux.com and saw that mandrake seemed to be a decent intro distribution. i went to the download page and selected the FIRST download option. it appears thats where i made my first mistake. i spent 6 hours downloading around 1.7 gig of data and then realised that the SECOND download option was the iso download option. so...im left with all 1.7 gig of mandrake on 3 cds but im unable to install it as far as i can see. a complicating factor is the fact that im using a sony vaio desktop with no floppy drive (i have a memory stick drive for what its worth). MY QUESTIONS ARE: have i totally wasted my time and money (it cost around 15 to get this done) by downloading these files? if these files are useless to me then why are they put up to be downloaded? is there, then, a way i can convert these files into 3 isos (to reproduce the iso mandrake distribution)- thus avoiding having to spend all that time and money downloading the isos instead? OR is there another way of installing it using what i have? ive spent the last few hours looking for answers but have come up with nothing concrete. please can someone give a conclusive answer...?

It looks like that you've downloaded the system in an uncompressed form (so to speak). I looked at the ftp dir of that first option and looks like it's all source. At the very bottom of the download page, there is a comment about, 'if you didn't download the iso's, this is what you'll need"...So I am sure you haven't wasted your time. Just gotta figure out how it wants to be installed.

The way it looks easiest to install from your situation is to install with the hd.img. Depending on what you've downloaded, you'll want to read the install.htm and go down to Other Install Methods. ftp://ftp2.sourceforge.net/pub/mirro...86/install.htm
That's the best i could find at the moment.

taz is right, what you've done is downloaded everything (hopefully) necessary to install from a hard drive instead of CD. I did this once, because I don't have a CD burner on my system.
It works, but just make sure you have *everything* that the instructions say you need. The first time through I was missing some pieces, which just made for a whole lot of lost time and much cursing!
