Mandrake 10 running very slowly

Hi. I have been running Mandrake 10 for a week now and I can't believe how slow it is. The box I am using to run it is not state of the art, with a 686 Cyrix CPU, but taking literally 5 min to load open office and about 2 to load Fire-Fox is over the top, compared with Mandrake 9.1, that was twice as fast as this distro. I have tried reducing the resolution to no real effect. The only web browser that runs at a decent speed is Dillo. As far as I know MDK 10 is using my Graphics card, although the driver it has is not downloaded from Nvidia, but was automatically selected on install.
Would downloading the driver speed things up, as it did in MDK 9.1 where it allowed me to play windows games using Winex? Any other recommendations would be welcome.
