I am new to linux and am interested in learning this system. Now I have installed both Knoppix and Suse 9.1 pro and was able to get Kmail up. But now I'm interested in installing Mandrake 10. So far everything works except Kmail. I have done things the same as the others and it keeps coming up smtp error. I have tried mail.charter.net and smtp.charter.net. So far nothing seems to work. I should say almost everything works my video player has a problem too. But I just need to concentrate on the email part of linux. Any advise would be appreciated.

Hard to know what to recommend trying just yet, so this is a dumb questions not specific to "Kmail" itself. Does it work with POP3 mail? If it does, this would lead me to think your smtp settings just need a tweak. That is, does your ISP require authentication before sending mail? (For this, there's probably a checkbox, then you'll need a username/password pair.)
