Mandrake 10 ADSL connection intermittent failure

The main problem is that I cannot connect to the POP server, nor to any of the mirror sites to download updates. I can do some limited surfing, and can post mail, but don't have full navigation capabilities. I had a similar problem with the Red Hat/Fedora machines, and tried to implement the same solution on the Mandrake 10 machine. The problem originated when the Australian telco, Telstra, made hardware changes to its ADSL service, and my ISP suggested changing the package sizes to overcome this. On the other Linux boxes the problem was fixed by modifying package sizes through typing the following into an editor screen (as root):

ifconfig eth0 mtu 1420

This has not worked on the Mandrake machine. Do you have any tips to modify package sizes?

There's a nice discussion of MTU here that includes firewall config. If you're behind a router, things can still get bolluxed:

Also, http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2481.html

I set up pppoe using the Roaring Penguin client on a Fedora box. It was definitely a "plug and pray" experience.

Hi k1mgy,

I'm writing this from the Red Hat machine. Unfortunately Mandrake 10 is sufficiently different to SuSE 7.3 for none of those tips to work. None of the values in the /etc/ppp/options, /etc/ppp/peers/pppoe, /etc/route.conf or /etc/rc.config were there for me to play around with. When logged on as root the /sbin/ifconfig mtu value remained at 1500, and nothing I tried could make it shift downwards. Is anyone else having problems with Mandrake 10 "hanging" when trying to connect to certain servers?
