man pages jacked up

i'm posting this for a friend.

"Whenever I do a "man" on something, the control characters are all
jacked up. One person here said to change my terminal emulation to
something else, but it didn't make a difference. Do you know how to fix
that so I don't see those stupid boxes and freaked up characters all
over?"
