making changes to a bootable cd

The project I'm working on is re-tooling a W98 anti-virus CD so that it has more up-to-date virus definitions on it. Though I generally use linux (RH7.3 these days), the anti-virus software is for checking windows machines.

Originally I thought the process involved creating a copy of the CD with new virus definitions in the correct directory. It is now clear it is more complicated than that.

When booting from the CD, it boots win 98 and auto starts the anti-virus software. Ctrl-c cancels the batch script and brings up a dos prompt. Checking contents of the A: drive, I found it contains 25 files requiring 6.6 megs. I have been unable to identify any images of this boot image on the CD. I had hoped to find something like a boot.img or boot.catalog type file, to help figure out how this CD works.

The process for creating a Win 98 bootable CD is well documented. However I cannot find anything about using a boot.img over 1.4 or 2.8 megs for the eltorito image. So my 6.6Mb boot image cannot be used. I wonder if they are using some sort of ramdisk approach or else merging some data from the CD onto the tail of the boot image after boot. All of the system boot files are present on the A: when in dos, as well as the virus definitions and s/w. Anyone have any ideas on how to create and use such a large boot image with mkisofs?

I appreciate any insight or suggestions anyone might have to offer.

Regards,
Matt

Yes, although my experience on bootable CDs is strictly with Linux. You can go to the following web site and download a script program called LifeBoat.

The guts of the LifeBoat script contains the commands to create a bootable CD of any size boot image up to the capacity of the CD.
