There's a package called dvd-slideshow that's designed for creating slideshows. It's main purpose is to generate slideshow streams for DVDs, but I believe you can keep just the generated mpeg stream if you want.
I'll have to say it was a major hassle syncing everything using just a text file. I'm still thinking there must be a better solution, preferably with a gui. Are the big full-fledged packages like cinelerra the only options for simple/NLE video editing in linux?
That's a nice piece of work. I like the fade-in transitions.
Yes, I suppose it would be nice to have a good gui for dvd-slideshow or the like, but I haven't seen any. It is built into Qdvdauthor, but I don't recommend it because that's perhaps the buggiest and most unstable program I've ever used. You might give it a try though if you're brave.
Remember though that things like this get easier as you get used to them, and I'm sure that by the second or third time around you'll be an expert at whipping these things out.
