make xconfig can't find Config.in

I just installed the ALSA sound drivers, and now i cannot configure my kernel because it cant find Config.in. it seems as though Config.in is a symbolioc link to whats supposed to be another Config.in located somewhere in the dirs i compiled ALSA. but it is nowhere to be found. any ideas as to resolve this problem?
