make courier-imap use shell users

Is there a way to be able to make it so I can have shell users being email accounts for courier-imap? I want to switch to it since I want maildirs instead of mboxes, but I also want to be able to use the /home/user/.procmailrc files and other stuff like that, so I don't want to use virtual users. So how do I go about setting it up that way?

Why is this so complicated? I figured I'd get an answer instantly, it can't be that hard is it?

What other imap server alternatives are there, which use maildirs? Since obviously courier-imap can't do what I need in a simple way, using shell users instead of virtual users.
