Make command....help!

Oh no, I'm fairly sure that I am going to look dumb for not knowing this but....

As a complete newbie to Linux and converting from Windoze can anyone explain where I am going wrong.

I have downloaded a piece of software I want to install on my SuSE 8.1 machine, decompressed it to a folder, run ./config whic works fine but I'm then told to type Make and then Make Install.

I am in rootbash but it tells me there is no make command.

Please be kind when replying!

Really appreciate your help....

are you typing Make or make? unix is case sensitive... if you're typing make and it's not working then it's probably not on your path, but that implies you've screwed something up as it should be in /usr/bin, which would always be on your path whoever you are. maybe it's not installed, but i've never ever know make not to be installed by default.

Thanks Chris...

You are right, I don't have make in my /usr/bin directory. My installation is a standard SuSE install using YaST.

Having looked at the install log it appears that make is an 'optional extra' which I have now installed. I wonder what else is left out.....

Really appreciate your help!

How did you install make?

Hello,

I have the same exact issue on my Linux SuSE 8.1 distribution, but don't know which make install package to install. What I want is to perform a MySQL install and that is what I need make for...which packages should install?

Thanks...
