'make' & 'make install commands not recognised by shell

I'm having difficulty installing tar.gz files in my SuSe 8.2. RPM files are fine. I can unpack the tarball no problem, but the command 'make' and the command 'make install' do not work in my shell. When I enter these commands I get the message 'command not recognised'.

I've tried every variation of these commands without success.
I've read the README and the INSTALL files for every package and they give the same generic instructions.
I've gone through the man pages & the info pages, but I cant find anything.
I've gone to the SuSe website, but theres nothing relevant.
I've also scoured the web but I cant find anything that helps.

Can anyone help? There are so many nice programs I want to try out, and I can only peer at them like a kid looking through a sweet shop window!

Welcome to LQ

It could be that make was not installed by default on your system. Do a search for automake (I think) to see if you have it.

Also, did you cd to the untarred directory, then type ./configure and then type make and then make install as root? Also, which programs are you having problems with?

You should go to Yast en select the software installation section and then you should search for 'make'.
I used to work with SuSe and it didn't install the make-command by default.
Maybe you will also need to install some C of C++ librarys

If you're using it, SuSE Personal Edition doesn't include compilers and such. You'll need to install them by downloading the rpm's etc. etc. (but that is only if you run the personal version)

Thanks for your help guys! As it was a freshly installed distro and I didn't have much data to back up, I decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall. Maybe a bit of an over reaction...but I was at my wit's end. I also got an assortment of rpms for c compilation-gcc, glibc-devel, bin-utils, and threw them in the mix, and things seem to work fine now.

It's boggling how many libraries and dependencies there are...you could easliy get lost tracking them all down. All part of the newbie experience I guess.
