Well, I am trying to set up a mail server for my network. I am not familiar with the programs needed by linux and their dependencies, as well as other programs needed to install the mail server (mySQL?).
I thought about using postfix after reading up on the topic a little, but it all seemed to get complicated when the mail server should function outside the local lan (internet), use a virtual user database (not local system users), support pop3 and smtp and a web-mail interface.
1) Probably a dumb question, but is there an easy way to have the server running on a dynamic IP? I am using dynDNS, which basically provides you with myself.is-a-geek.com (or similar), which points to my IP. It doesn't support MX records. My other registered domain (with godaddy.com), points a CNAME www to myself.is-a-geek.com. Is there any way to do something similar with an MX record??
2) What software, daemons and others do i need? are the best?
If your new to mail servers I would suggest you use something like sme server. It must run on a dedicated machine but it is easy to install just follow the install instructions and you'll have a fully loaded and operating mail server. You can grab the iso from here it's not small about 334mb in size:
