Mail in Opera 8.0 suddenly invisible


I installed Opera 8.0 and used it successfully for a day. Today I thought I'd subscribe to some newsgroups, so I did that and got the messages OK in Opera (where they share the email facility). But I decided I didn't want newsgroups after all, so I deleted both the accounts I'd set up, and deleted all the newsgroup messages.

As soon as I did that, NONE of my messages (emails) were visible anywhere. The count of them still showed, but not the headers, not the text, nothing. I sent myself one to test, and it didn't appear, either, although it was reported as received and the count shown increased by one.

Any ideas what's wrong? It's very difficult to get into the Opera forums right now, because of the server overload from downloading the new version.

(Edit: I managed to post in the Opera users' forum, where several persons have reported the same problem of invisible emails--the files are there, but not displayed. Reindexing the emails didn't accomplish anything. That was one of the few suggestions as to how to fix this.)

After trying the suggestions on the Opera users' forum (did not solve problem), and after reinstalling Opera, and copying all the messages to another location and then deleting all the message folders and then importing the messages into Opera--still everything was invisible.

Upon which I got rid of Opera and went back to Firefox and Thunderbird.

I'm glad I didn't pay the registration fee. I would have, if the program had worked right. But seeing that others were experiencing the same problem (therefore it wasn't necessarily anything wrong with my setup), and that users on the forum were clueless about how to solve it--I decided the situation was completely unacceptable, and at this point I intend to stick with the Mozilla products, even though I really don't like them very well. (Which is why I wanted to give Opera a try. I'd used it under Windows years ago and preferred it to IE.)

On the bright side, I lost few if any emails, because I was able to import the last two days' worth (which is when I was using Opera) into Thunderbird and put them where they belonged.
