Mail and attachments

When using any Linux mail client (Mozilla, ximian, balsa, etc), I am having trouble figuring out how to open attachments. More specifically, MS Word, Excel, and even plain text documents.

Opening a Word doc directly causes the mail client to crash. Saving the file and using OpenOffice to open the document causes OpenOffice to crash.

Any ideas.

Ugh... MSOffice problems. I had better luck with gnumeric for most MSExcel spreadsheets. As for word compatibiliy - sometimes abiword works nice, other times it dies. It appears that is has as much to do with what MS versions the document was created with as what's in the document.

Yeah, tried Abiword, too. It just crashes no matter what. I was able to get OpenOffice Writer to "open" the documents as long as they had '.doc' appended to them. Funny thing, though, it doesn't error, but nothing comes up. Plus the header shows an icon with the document name with a corner ripped off, like when you try to open a jpeg that is corrupted.
