magicdev taking up too much cpu time
Hi,
I am running a several month-long calculation in RedHat Linux 7.2 and find that magicdev is taking significant CPU resource. At the start of the run it took 0.5% of the CPU. A day later, it is taking 2% and the amount is creeping up steadily. Does anyone know why this is happening? Can I just kill the process without messing up the system? Can I then turn it on when I need to or mount the CD from a command line prompt. I need to work in Xwindows, but I hardly need to mount a CD. I should mention that a second hard drive is mounted as well as the system HD. Pete Hahn |
I think you can, but I don't know the program. It's not a main system component, so it won't make harm, I think.

Hi Mara,
Thanks for the advice. Several things have happened since I posted the problem. I found out that magicdev is a daemon for automounting the CD. Second, I realized that I had made a mistake in reading the table written by the top command. magicdev is actually taking an insignificant amount of cpu time. So the problem is not really a problem. This tread can be canceled. Unless someone else wishes to comment. Regards, Pete |
