Macromedia Flash

Why is it that macromedia flash works on some sites, but others say that it needs to be installed?

I need to get this working... asap.

Thanks for you help!

more and more sites want flash 8 which doesn't exist on linux... maybe that's it.

The chances are that the non-working sites need version 8, and and the working sites are ok with version 7. Macromedia (now Adobe) haven't released flash 8 for Linux, and don't intend to. They are however going to release version 9, but I think not for a few months yet.

Can you provide an example of a working, and a non-working site?

If you have a 64 bit version of Linux, there is no program.

I see... thanks!

Working: www.hardees.com (stupid site)

Not working: cbs.com (big brother stuff)

For these sites it's the version thing.

I think on 64 bit systems you an still run 32 bit binaries. I seem to remember that if you use the 32 it version of firefox, the 32 bit plugins work. You can still use 64 apps for other apps, but to use plugins, the browser must be the same architecture.

You can install firefox (win32) and wine. Also, I found this
http://weblogs.macromedia.com/jd/arc...lash_linux.cfm
It leads to a simple hack to spoof some sites to think you have flash higher than version 7.

I did this with some success (following some howto, which I don't seem to be able to find now). I was also able to install the flash 9 plugin in wine. It worked, but there were a few caveats:
  • Runs a little slow - scrolling performance was bad.
  • Ugly. Fonts are so on were not pretty.
  • No integreation with your regular, native firefox (bookmarks, downloads)

On the plus side, because wine uses ALSA for audio, flash sites with sound could be used while using other apps, whereas OSS-native-flash hogs the soundcard.

I understand that flash 9/linux when it finally arrives will support ALSA, which is good news. The new Skype (in beta now, you can download it), also supports ALSA. With a little luck we can finally kill off OSS!
