Any reason why you're not using an rpm file? You might want to check out repoforge.org

also a word OF EXTREME WARNING !!!
RHEL5 dose have issues with the third party repos !!!!!!
so install and CONFIGURE "yum-priorities" !!!!!
RF is incompatible with RHEL5 !!!
YOU MUST PROTECT THE BASE INSTALL !!!
otherwise RF will REPLACE some of the BASE RHEL 5 install and RHN will be broken

John's right: I should have mentioned that! If you actually enable another repository (as opposed to just downloading rpms and installing them manually, fixing the dependencies yourself), then do
yum install yum-priorities
and then edit each repository file to add "priority=1" for Red Hat and "priority=2" for the next one, and so on.

wget http://pkgs.repoforge.org/rpmforge-r...l5.rf.i386.rpm

rpm -ivh rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el5.rf.i386.rpm

yum install mplayer -y

Because of the mplayer package depends on a lot of, you use yum easy installation.

we do not even know if this a a fully bought and LICENSED install of the older RHEL 5
nor if it is 5.0 or the current 5.8

The voice of experience (with Fedora rather than RHEL, but completely analogous). Been there, done that, wasted too much time fixing the system after messing it up.

You mean the source code package installation will be better, isn't it.

But it also need to install these dependencies package.
