LVM - VFS Locking Patch for 2.4.21-99 kernels

I have been trying to master (or even begin) making LVM snapshots of partitions.

I have 2 linux boxes, one is a Debian system using the 2.6 kernel (which is not the topic of this message, but incidentally I've much work to do there as well), and the other is a SuSE 9.0 install using kernel 2.4.21-99.

I've tried doing the lvcreate command with all the snapshot extensions properly in place as per the instructions of several Howto's, but each time, it causes the partition (which contains our Notes/Domino installation) to become unusuable, forcing me to reinstall. I've read about this whole VFS locking patch for Device-Mapper (a tool which assists with LVM apparently) and this sounds like what I need, except that the RedHat site (formerly the sistina site) seems to assume that I have a certain amount of knowledge and understanding of what they're talking about. Needless to say I have a few questions.

For those interested, the site is: http://sources.redhat.com/dm/patches.html

There's only one 2.4-based kernel patch listed, specifically for 2.4.6-rc1. Now, I don't use that kernel, and since the whole purpose of this exercise is to back everything up, I'm not feeling great about the notion of doing a full kernel upgrade at this juncture (patching is enough stress for the moment).

Does anyone know if this designation covers kernels UP TO 2.4.6-rc1 or will it only work for 2.4.6-rc1? I'd hate to hose my system.

If it won't work, does anyone know where I can find the 2.4.21-99 VFS locking patch?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Sam
