Unhappy LVM Problem

I apoligise in advance for crossposting this in a fedora forum tonight also.
with that...

Tonight I wanted to accomplish my goal of adding a second hard drive to my system. (Fedora 6) I used the logical volume manager to add my second Cheetah (sdb) to Volgroup 00 as to add room to the / directory. I spent the afternoon reading a few lvm faqs and how-tos and thought I understood the concept pretty good.

Anyway I rebooted, and must have done something horribly wrong as I am now am at the grub> prompt, and cant go any further. Ive manually tried typing "kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2868.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00" but says it cannot mount selected partition.

I ran the FC6 rescue function on the disk, and came to the rescue shell. Typing LVM -help gives me a list of options. My physical volumes are as follows:

/dev/sda2 VolGroup00 lvm2 a- 34.06G (size) 32.00m (free)
/dev/sdb1 VolGroup00 lvm2 a- 34.16G 34.16G

Typing "vgs" gives me my volume group data:

VolGroup00 2(PV) 2(LV) 0(SN) wz--n-(Attr) 68.22G(Vsize) 34.19 (VFree)

My initial install of FC6 was the default hard drive layout. On one disk only. (sda) I am scared as sh*t to merge groups/erase or whatnot without some additional advise from someone more knowlegable.

Thanks Again.

Have you read the how to from TLDP? It has an excellent section on extending file systems, and if you have problems following it just post back.

Regards,

Alunduil

I kinda had simmilair thing once, added a drive, made it a physical volume, added to the volume group, made some logical volumes, moved some data (removed an older, slower drive) and put some mount points into fstab.
That really was simple. Everyting worked.
So i gave the box a 'three finger salute'.....maybe i should have done a 'sync' before that:
The uuid from the second disc was not written to the drive, so the volume group was incomplete. Because i was testing some features like striping, a lot was gone
I started over, hope it isnt as bad with you as it was with me and my holiday photos....
PS: you should try 'hirens' disc (sure you can find it), it has a lot of recovery/diagnostic stuff to boot from cd.
Good luck!
PS2: now succesfully using lvm2 with striped volumes, now using ext3 though.

Smile Problem Solved!

Thank You alunduil and "dan" for your recomendations.
I read through the LVM faq, and removed my physical sdb drive, dropped to a console, fdisked the sda volume, and from there could copy and save my 14gigs of fun stuff.

Thank You Again

Zach
