lpd "no identifier" error

I've set up printing on two machines at work (Red Hat 7.3) with the simple GUI printer configuration tool in the control panel. One works, but the other does not. As far as I can tell, I set these machines up identically except that one is a dual boot W2K/Linux box. The linux config on each is the same.

In both cases I'm adding a JetDirect printer (HP 4100). After some fiddling with the /etc/hosts file to resolve the "bad hostname" issue, I have printing working beautifully on one machine. On the other, installing with the same method to the same printer, everything appears to work. I apply the changes and restart lpd. I can stop and restart lpd without errors. All seems well. But when I send the jobs, I get a confirmation that they were sent, but they just sit in the local que. I can manage and remove them, but they never leave. When I query the que with lpq -Plp0, I get "lp0:update status: no identifier for 'hfA180' at 15:45:06.916"

Network connectivity is fine on the troublesome machine and I can ping the printer from it.

Any ideas?

Thanks
