Low GPU performance

Hi! I'm using
07:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV630 [Radeon HD 2600 Series]

But the performance of 3D is very low.
glxgears gives only
1393 frames in 5.0 seconds = 278.587 FPS - that's insane!

GPU runs on ATI proprietary drivers.

What should I start with?
