lost interrupt from new dvd drive on old computer

bought a new dvd drive, a lg gsa-4167b, and tried to install it on my old computer, a dfi ak70 at 550mhz, on the secondary ide channel.

the thing is, it works fine when i boot into xp, it also worked fine when i hooked it up externally from a usb enclosure, however when its hooked up internally linux wont boot, saying:
...
attached ide-cdrom driver.
lost interrupt
lost interrupt
lost interrupt
lost interrupt
...
which it repeats slowly and endlessy...

having said that when i hook up the 160 gb hard drive, which i normally keep in the usb enclosure, internally, it works fine but ocassionally i get a kernel message about a missing interrupt
