looking for stand-alone ftp server

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I'm running a server with centos 5 and cpanel. I'm looking for a simple ftp server to add to this existing setup. it will be on an alternate port, like 2121. I need to specify accounts and permissions in a seperate config file from the main system. there must be something like this somewhere, but I haven't been able to find anything.

Take a look at vsftp.

http://vsftpd.beasts.org/

There are probably pre-compiled versions available from http://rpm.pbone.net, or another source of your choice, if you don't want to compile it yourself.

I've tried vsftpd already. I've heard I can use it for what I need, but I can't find any documentation on how to set it up that way. I was unable to figure it out and get it working.

Look at the Virtual Users Section..
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_vsftpd

also look at the Virtual Users Example files on the vsftp website

ok, I have it semi-working. I think I was going off that same document a month ago when I was trying last. I'm still having trouble getting write access to work. I'd like to have full download access to the users, but only write access to an 'incoming' directory. I'm not sure how to do this, but I'm trying without any luck so far.

I haven't tried this set but it is supposed to be a copy of the BulletProof software which I had had great success with:

http://linux.maruhn.com/sec/dpsftp.html

give it a try.

The BulletProof FTP server is great for Windows and has very easy permission controls and seeing as this is a direct copy pretty well it should be what your looking for.

sounds like it could be a nice program, if it works with command line, no gui. but it's a dead link. the project on sourceforge.net is a dead link too, 404.
