While it's true that paper and books are sometimes nice, and I have lots of them, when I'm getting into a server project or a new piece of software, I end up spending a lot of time with man pages, google, online documentation often in the form of wikis, and various blogs and mailing list archives. I also wouldn't want to minimize the value of just doing things to see how they work.
