Looking for a new X windows System, what is your favorite?

What is your favorite x window system for speed mainly and then any other reasons?

I am looking to install a new X windows system since gnome is so slow on my computer and I have heard that blackbox and fluxbox are quick. Any others or ones you prefer?

Let me know why too, thanks.

Just for the record, you aren't talking about installing a new X window system. You're talking about installing a new desktop environment/window manager which will run on top of X.

If Gnome is too slow for your computer, you might want to try out Windowmaker. It's very, very fast, super customizable and pretty easy to get the hang of. I've heard good things about Fluxbox, but I have no personal experience with it.

Icewm is pretty fast. Give your system specs(processor and amount of ram). That will give everyone a better idea of what you have to work with and whether the slowness might be due to something else.

Yea, IceWM is super fast, but I never really liked it... It just didn't click with me as much as Windowmaker did.

I'm running (and really like) XFce4.

I enjoy Waimea, which is kinda a blackbox/openbox clone. Really fast, configurable, allows for transparency.

windowmaker is da bomb, but kinda boring looking after a while :( super fast though :D
xfce4 looks very good but never got to try it yet

What do you guys know about memory usage for

blackbox:
xcfe4
windowmaker
icewm

Is there one that uses less than the others as I don't have much ram to work with, which is part of my problem I think.

Gill Bates 11-21-2003 08:34 PM

not sure about this but i dont think xcfe is as light as the other 3

i think of xfce4 as being about halfway between kde/gnome and the lighter WMs. you can configure only the modules you want to load, though. it's really a usable environment.

if that's still too much, try windowmaker or fluxbox, they are ripping fast. :D

fluxbox is good im runnin it on my iMac its great, real quick. but a bit of a pain to setup :)
