Looking for a image editing program - open source
 

Greetings fellow Linux users.

I do a lot of 3D modeling in blender and I would like a program for creating textures for my models. I have used gimp, and it does the job, but it just does not quite fit for me. I do not need anything too fancy. The things that I am looking for in a program are mainly as follows:

• Layers
• Image rotation
• Paint Fill and brush (add on brushes would be nice)
• Support for png and tiff
• Levels, curves, hue and saturation.

In short I would like a free (open source is preferred) alternative to something like pixelmater. I can use a cloud based alternative but I really would rather use a stand alone program as I do not always have internet connection. Does such a program exist? What would you use?

Ugh, I don't want to sound sarcastic, really don't mean to, but that program is called "the gimp". You don't need to master all of it to do what you want. These functionalities you need are easily found in the menu. There's also a gimp plugin that can be of help when it comes to making textures.

I know the gimp can do these things and I have used it to do them. Perhaps I am just being nit picky but the layout drives me nuts. It feels rather disorganized to me :(. Don't get me wrong, the gimp is a great program and the fact that it is open source is awesome but I am wondering what other alternatives there are, if there are any at all.

Well, I can agree with your point, I am not a lover of the gimp UI either.

To answer your question, then, the only alternative that comes closer to gimp (that I know of) is krita. You need kdelibs to run that, though.

Have you considered inkscape ?
It is an awesome program which is very versatile. Try a search on
inkscape textures

@i92guboj Thanks for the link. Unfortunately it does not quite do what I need it to. It appears (to me) to be more of a vector drawing program. A good one, but not the best for textures. That and the limited file format support :(. I found something called gimpshop and I am trying to compile it. I will post how it goes. If anyone has any more suggestions they are quite welcome.

Well gimpshop is giving me a major headache so I think that that is a no go :(.

Perhaps mtpaint, then? Or perhaps Pixel?

I looked into Pixel and it was good, but I don't have the $50 for the full edition. mtpaint looks promising.

It wasn't me (but another user called tredegar) who suggested the use of inkscape.

I know about inkscape, and, bugs aside, it's a good program, but as you say it's not aimed at pixel art at all. It would fit the corel draw niche, not the photoshop one.

About gimpshop, from what I remember, it's just a gimp fork with a redesigned UI. The main problem is that, if I am certain, it's ancient. I don't think anyone is still developing that, and it's based on an old version of the gimp. It might not work on actual distros, and you will probably face problems if you try to compile against the current version of the needed libraries.

However, I have some good news for you if you feel like gimpshop could be ok for you.

The gimp team has been working on an alternative UI mode for quite some time now. I didn't try it myself, but from what I know it's targeted at gimp 2.8, so, current unstable versions (2.7.x) might have that capability, provided they are modern enough. You'll have to find out yourself. But if you google for "gimp single window" you will get some results. Filter the search for results newer than one month to get the relevant stuff.

Yes, gimpshop was not going to work out. This script looks really interesting though. I will check it out for sure.

i92guboj That script did the trick. It is much easier to work in gimp will all of the windows in one box. This script should hold me till the next version of gimp comes out with support for this kind of thing.
