login problem

Hi,
I'm a linux newbie so please explain clearly and in detail. I have a 10gb IDE hard disk. I have installed win2k on the first 4gb (NTFS) and linux redhat 7.0 on the remaining space. I followed the various install howto's on installing and dualbooting win2k/linux. Redhat installed fine and windows booted fine too. But when I tried to boot redhat first time (i had to boot from floppy first time cos LILO was installed on / "root" partition), it came all the way to the login screen, the screen output flashed a few times and I got this error:
"according to /var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running (625) but seems to have been mysteriously murdered"
This process repeats itself and the same error message repeats until i reboot.
What is the problem?

hope somebody can help,
thanks

Most likely there is a misconfiguration with X as its trying to boot into a graphical mode.

At the lilo prompt try typing Linux 3 and see if that boots you to a command prompt login. From there you can try running Xconfigurator to reconfigure X.
