locale problems in SuSe
 

I installed Suse on two differemt machine (FTP Download) both with different configurations. The problem is that once I am logged into X and execute xconsole the first two lines say this in the console window.

locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory

I also noticed when loading firefox I am getting errors converting from UTF-8 to STRING: Could not open converter from 'UTF-8' to 'ISO-8859-1'. I think it is all related.

Since you don't say which desktop you're using, I'll assume KDE. I'm sure Gnome has something similar. Open the Control Center, click on Regional & Accessibility, then click on Country/Region and Language. Go through the tabs and fill in anything that's missing, then close CC. You may need to logout/login for changes to take effect. See if that helps. The problem you describe sounds like you haven't set the default region and language char set yet.

You were right, I had not set the country but it made no change. And yes, I am using KDE. This is a bit of a ugly problem because I am seeing error messages the more I use the system, like in Firefox and Openoffice. Both complain about Locale.

I am wandering now, since this is the first time I installed suse and I did not fully understand the installer at the time if I did not forget to install something.

The best way I knew how, I reinstalled SuSe and the problem went away! :) Actually what I do think happend is that this was the first time I installed SuSe and I think I forgot to add a supporting file for something, what is was I have no idea. Anyways, problem resolved.

I installed KDE 3.3 over that installation hoping it would fix it, but it did not. After I installed 3.3 (great by the way), I could no longer open yast Install Software. So I threw in the towel and reinstalled.
