Local Image database / organizer

I have a bunch of images that I'd like to organize. I like the "tag" system you see on some websites and was going to write a database / php but I figure there's probably already software for Linux that does this (like maybe a photo manager). (edit -- not anything for like a website just something locally)

Does lq.org have any suggestions?

The F-Spot desktop image organizer is shipped with many Linux distributions these days - it does search, tagging, slide shows and simple editing. On a GNOME desktop it will appear under Applications > Graphics.
