need help to use lirc with mplayer

combiled & installed lirc-0.6.5 for Pinnacle PCTV Pro

mplayer fails with following:

mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: Permission denied
Failed opening lirc support!
You won't be able to use your remote control
