Linux Software website

I started using Linux with Debian as my first distro. I use the apt-get front end synaptic to find and install software. The biggest advantage for me was the ability to search for software. For example if I needed a par2 checking program I typed par2 and synaptic listed 3 relevant programs for me that I could use. Same goes for other categories like photoediting or newsreaders. Now I am using another distro and i wondered what the best Linux software site is. I would like to search in the descriptions in order to find the programs best suited for my task. like I would in Synaptic. Any suggestions?
