Linux software to convert from 8 bits to 24 bits image?

Hello, I want to convert images of 16 or 8 bits to 24 bits BMP. However, having tried convert and other alternatives, nothing has been found to work.

Is there any available script or software that can do this?

Thanks

So that people don't waste time with their replies, in what way did convert not work, and what are all the "alternatives" that you have tried?

While you could save as or import, you won't really add in any extra information. It works to remove bits but you don't have anything to gain by adding bits. Like adding color to a black and white photo. Can't be done with some simple adjustment like turn on color.

A speceific program must have 24 bits, either its 16 bits or 32 bits before the conversion.

I have tried ImageMagick, Photoshop, Pixeluvo and convert
