Linux software for art school

What software does Linux have that would help me in art school? Most of the students use a Macintosh and use software like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. They do a lot of stuff without the computer, but they also do stuff with the computer. Does Linux have software for art school? Is it any good like Adobe?

I am getting a Macintosh G5 tomorrow. I am thinking of trying to use Mac OS and Linux on it because people in the forum have told me that I can do that. The G5 is from my friend for free, like Linux.

If you are in art school and use Linux, what software do you use?

I'm not in art school, but I've spent more than a decade working with graphic design software as part of my job. Check out:
  • The Gimp -- as a Photoshop substitute
  • Inkscape -- as an Illustrator substitute
  • Scribus -- as a PageMaker/InDesign substitute

Good luck, and let us know how it works out for you.

Regards,

-Drew

That looks like it could help. Thank you for the comment about the software and links to their web.

What distro are you running - you probably have the Gimp already if you use one of the larger distros
