Linux runs real slow all of a sudden

Well last night I was doing my normal stuff like e-mail, surfing, etc and left for about 3-4 hours and when I came back my system took like 5 minutes to respond. I'm using Mandrake 8.1 with Gnome and when I tried to start Galeon it took it forever to come up and then wouldn't connect to any sites. I shut it down for the night and came back this morning and when it started loading Aurora spit out a bunch of garbage when loading hard drake. It took it maybe 10 minutes to fully load to Gnome. I shut it back down and used the non-fb from Lilo and when it loaded it said everything was okay but it still took 10 minutes. Everything is delayed in response. E-term, Mozilla, XMMS all of them take about 2-3 minutes to come up. I've been using Mandrake for the last 6-7 months and I've never had anything like this. If somebody can help me out that'd be great cause I really don't want to have to start over with a new install.

I have one "guess". The only time I have had a big slowdown in Linux is when my cable internet connection is down. It sounds as though your internet was down. A "network" linux install checks the network and if it is not up and running, it will send repeated requests, especially with "file management" type activities, since it will look for network resources as well as local ones.

Smarter persons than me may know more solutions but I have come up with two: (1) get the network back on line; and (2) build a kernel that has no network support and then save it as a separate choice for lilo, like the "nonfb" option.

Thanks for the reply. It could be feasible with my internet connection. After all that happened I had to swith over to Win98 to post this and my connection was off and on for a few hours. It's been stable since then so I'll give it another shot.

****edit****

Well sure enough it is zipping right along like it used to. Using it right now
:D

Never even thought about an DSL connection slowing down my whole system like that.

Thanks again
