linux ram question

i have 382 megs of ram and im running debian woody with icewm. when i first start my comp i run "free" and it reports taht i have used about 64 megs of ram. after a few hours of normal usage i run it again and it says that i have used upwards of 300 megs of ram, even if i have all my programs closed. is there a memory leak somewhere or is this normal?
