Linux Patchs

Im am so confused about kernel patchs.

On linux head quarters the list the each kernel version.

For instance on the 2.2 version they list them from 2.2.0 to 2.2.25.

The confusion Im having is what patch to start with when I have Kernel 2.2.16-22. Why dont they use the same format? Are they just omiting the third number and using the next for the patch or what?

Should I start with 2.2.23 patch?

After I apply the patch do I then have to recompile the kernel?

why not grab the latest stable kernel (2.4.21) instead? Thats only a minor patch for an old kernel.

Small Steps

The problem I have is I am on RH 7.0.

I started trying to update the kernel to the latest but I ended up replacing all the rpm's anyway (Dependency nightmare).

So I thought I would try patching the older kernel to get my feet wet.

You should be able to upgrade your kernel without running into any dependancies.

If you were using an RPM, you will have problems (binary compatability), but grabbing the source and compiling it yourself shouldn't give you any problems.
