Linux Mint Maya Desktop

I installed Mint and the default desktop was Cinnamon. I logged out yesterday and chose Mate as desktop. Nice, but I prefer Cinnamon. However problem is I cannot regain my Cinnamom Desktop-changing the Desktop at logout and restart brings up Mate! Is there a Terminal command perhaps which will change the desktop for me? Thanks in advance.John

Before you login, there is an icon on the login screen for "Session"; select your desired desktop then and login.

Mint will ask if you want to make it your default; answer "yes."

There is a way to select your terminal from the command line; it will involve creating an .xinitrc file and several other modifications (there may be other ways, less orthodox ways that I'm not familiar with). I doubt you want to go there. If you are interested, you can read about .xinitrc on the Arch wiki; it's oriented to Arch, but it's a good reference.

Thanks for the response, but having chosen Cinnamon for the session, it still loads Mate...interesting. I'll have a look at Option 2 you refer to...thanks again

I must say that's very odd. My first inclination is to test it again and then check the log files to see if I found something, but my Mint computer is busy right now and I can't test to find where such things get logged. My first guess would be /var/log/messages or /var/log/Xorg.0.log, but I'm not sure. I'll try to have a look tomorrow.

Thanks

for the response. I tried all possibilities and gave up and re-installed Mint - no great problem as I had saved my data. Interesting though..I'll stick to Cinnamon from now on..much more pleasant. Greetings from Oz
