Linux Mint - how do you configure Kate?

I just installed Kate text editor in Linux Mint 17.1 and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get to the settings dialog. I recall a preference or settings menu, but I can't seem to find that anywhere. How do I get to that dialog? I want to change some default stuff like showing line numbers, and I also want to change the theme.

I think you will find most of what you are looking for under the "View" and "Tools" menus. For example, "View" is where you find "show line numbers." Tools is where you select your encoding and much other stuff (Tools-->Mode for encoding, for example).

Once you get it configured to your liking, use the "Sessions" menu to save that session. When you open Kate the next time, you will get a dialog to select your session type.

Tested in Kate 4.10.5.

Hmmm that must have been a recent change then? I recall there was an actual dialog box where you can set the default stuff, change themes etc.

Also how do you set themes? I want green text on black, and change other stuff of that nature.

This is the dialog I'm trying to get to:

https://patches.fedorapeople.org/kat...igdialog01.png

I could have sworn it should be under Edit or something and called Preferences or Configure Kate or something along those lines. I see no option like that in any of the menus.

So on my home system in Kubuntu I hae more options under "Settings". One of them is "Configure Kate". But on the Mint System the only options I have under Settings are the first two. "Show toolbar" and "show status bar".

How do I get all the options to show up?

That dialog is under Settings-->Configure Kate.

I'm using Kate on Slackware --Current, but I also get the same dialog on Kate in Mint 17.1.

Yeah I don't get that, this is all I get:

For some reason, can't take a screenshot in Mint if a menu is open, so took a picture.

On my Kubuntu system I get way more options under that menu.

I think something is seriously borked in your Kate install. Here are two thoughts for testing:

Try starting Kate from the command line ("kate" is the command). See if it throws any error messages on startup.

Create a new user, log in as the new user, and test Kate. If it works properly for the new user, something is borked in your home directory settings.

You might also try removing and reinstalling the application.

This was already installed as default. This is a brand new install. I also googled and found someone else having the issue. It was one of those really terribly designed text based forums though that are really hard to navigate, did not get much out of it. Another interesting thing is if you go to file open it crashes. The user I found having the same issue was having that issue too. I need to try to find that post again. Searching for kate is hard because it's a common name so get tons of irrelevant results.

If I try to launch it from command line as (mine or another user) this is what I get:

Code:
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
kate(25197)/kdeui (KIconLoader): Error: standard icon theme "oxygen" not found!

kate(25197): No ksycoca4 database available!

kate(25197)/kdecore (trader) KServiceTypeTrader::defaultOffers: KServiceTypeTrader: serviceType "KTextEditor/Plugin" not found
kate(25197): No ksycoca4 database available!

kate(25197)/kdecore (trader) KServiceTypeTrader::defaultOffers: KServiceTypeTrader: serviceType "Kate/Plugin" not found
kate(25197) KXMLGUI::ActionList::plug: Index  2  is not within range (0 -  1
Tried to uninstall/reinstall but did not change anything. Mind you that output gives me a bit more stuff to google for... going to see what I find.

Got it working!

Had to install these:

Code:
apt install kdelibs-bin kdelibs5-data kdelibs5-plugins
Why they don't include those by default is beyond me...

Found my answer here:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopi...85634&p=961569

I did not even realize that open/close crashed it till I tried it so never even thought of searching for that.

So yeah after installing those extra packages it seems to work fine now.

Glad you got it working.

I also would have expected the package manager to install the dependencies. I have not yet had aptitude/apt/synaptic fail to do so.

This was a weird one. Thanks for the follow-up.

I submitted a bug report here. I'm amazed that after 12 months this hasn't been addressed. In the future, please submit a bug report.
