Linux Mint 17

I am running Mint Maya and I wonder about upgrading to the latest version. Is it possible to do an upgrade from the terminal? If anyone has any information I would love to hear from them. Thanks. John (new to Linux)

Backup all your documents, photos etc and then do a fresh installation of Linux Mint 17.1.

I thought

that would be a reply.Thank you! That means installing drivers for all peripherals again. I probably won't bother as "maya" runs well..unless there is a super reason to upgrade.

Yes, but Linux Mint 17 will add 2 extra years to your life since it is supported until 2019!!

And watch out - Mint became significantly heavier from (was it) 15 or 16 on.
Used to run Mint 13 on my StinkBad T42, but mint 16 was too much for it, not to mention 17. It's running Slackware 14.1 now and it runs fine.

Also tried Mint 17.1 on a Acer Aspire 5536 (added that in HCL), but it was irritatingly slow. Now that machine is running PCLinuxOS 2014.12 and it runs fine.

Try MINT and MINT Debian as LiveUSB before you commit to installing. I agree with beachboy2, instead of upgrade perform a fresh install, but remember that you can "add" a fresh install and if it doesn't serve you well, you can boot back into your older version and even reclaim the drive space used for 17.

Should note that LM has recently started only using the Ubuntu's LTS base.
This means that for the first time, the developers recommend upgrading via the update manager.

Obviously, backing up prior is a excellent idea.
Also in chances of reliability, a fresh install will always beat upgrading.

Mint now supports online upgrades. I used it to go from v. 17 to 17.1 without incident. http://lmelinux.net/2014/12/05/upgra...-mint-17-17-1/

I do intend to stick with v. 17.x throughout the life of the LTS, but it's nice to know that Mint has added an online upgrade to its supported capabilities.
