Linux like Puppy, Dialup modem recognition & fast on v low spec P2 or P3 + 128 ram

Suggestions please for linux systems like Puppy, which run fast (rel to windoze) on old spec pentium 2 or P3 with little ram & recognise hardware esp. dialin modems.

I'm an old fart vollunteer for a charity whose been reviving old donated PCs to run quick(ish) with Linux Puppy, and several other small footprint linux which installs on & runs a variety of simple apps on DIALIN internet. Out of the box Dialup modem-recognition is critical as our users have very little $, & often nil experience of pc and we try to give them quickish revived PCs running a basic set of simple office & internet functions to get them started.

Puppy 4.0 Linux is great & meets the spec except where it doesn't dialout but freezes on SOME Dialup modems.

All replies welcome
Thx movestuff

Linux does not recognize internal modems. Internal modems are win-modems, requiring special alteration to the serial ports. Get yourself an external modem, that connects to the com port, and install the
Code:
pppd
package. Use
Code:
pppd
to configure the connection. You can also use
Code:
minicom
. Vector linux is light weight. Just don't install
Code:
KDE
or
Code:
gnome
. Use a light weight window manager and gui, like
Code:
fluxbox
.
