Linux kernel version

Just wondering how one can find out the EXACT version of the running kernel. the command kernelversion just gives me 2.4
The reason I ask Is I just recompiled the kernel (2.4.18) and I want to be absolutely sure it worked (even though it booted after I updated lilo). Thanx beforehand.
