Linux Kernel?

Hey,

I'm trying to get my display working in Mandrake 10.0,
and ran into a few problems. I installed the kernel for the Driver install, but when I try to get into my GUI, it gives me an error saying that it failed to initialize the NVdriver kernel module. After a bit of research, I came to the conclusion that this is because of the incorrect kernel. If this is the case, where do I get the kernel I need, and how do I find out which one I need?

Sorry if I seem a bit scatterbrained, I'm just frustrated with the display problem. Thanks in advance!

try to maually load your nvidia module. As root try
modprobe nvidia
then try
startx

edit/added later

Did you just install the kernel source? Have you ran the nvidia installer to compile you new module? My advide above is assuming that you already compiled the module.

what kernel do you have? Are you sure you have a nvidia card?have you followed the instructions nvidia provides in it README ?
You need to give more informtion before people are able to help you here.

Thanks for the advice---
In response to your questions:
Yes, I'm positive that I have an nVidia card. I built my machine.
I don't know what kernel I'm running. Is there an easy way to tell?
I did run the nVidia compiler, and it succesfully installed the driver,
so I assumed that it worked. I'll do the modprobe right now,
and then try and post the results.

PS, is there any good way of shutting down X when I can't see it?
If I try and load it, and can't see anything, I end up having to power down
without unmounting, which may cause system damage.

Thanks again,

Haku
