Linux keeps crashing!
I use linux 7.3 and the installation went fine. whenever i try to use YAST to configure my network settings so I can go on the internet when the installation program opens up it crashes.
Please Help! |
ok... i'm guessing that you use suse. we need a bit more info to help here. what kernel version, hardware, what kind of network are you on... do you get any error messages... ect. are you having this problem from a fresh install or from a configuration after the install?
|
which crashes? yast or the entire box?
|
whoops
sorry i was being a bit vague
here's wot i got. terayon tj210 modem usb cable modem (ndis5) network adapter manufacturer:turbonet device status:working properly ( in windows it says that) version: 4.10.2222 usb cable modem (WDM) device type: universal serial bus controllers manufacturer:turbonet i think thats all. |
Do you own the modem or are you renting?
if you are renting call the ISP and tell them you need an ethernet modem. Seriously, USB is not good for modems. This is only my opinion and you may still be able to get by with it. |
usb is okay
yeah i am renting a usb modem but if i used an ethernet modem then the same may occour. anyway its linux which crashes when i try to setup the modem not the hardware
|
this might help, here's what i get in the console once i've loaded up linux.
console log for linux linux kernel: ip-tables: (c) 2000 core team linux kernel: ip conntrack (2048 buckets, 16384 max) linux kernel: kernel: usb.c: usb device 2 (vend/prod 0x40 e/8xe301) is not claimed by any active driver. linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-226 linux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-226 |
There only a few usb modems that work in linux and even those are hard to get working, you'd save a lot of grey hairs by having your isp replace it for a real modem.
|
a real modem?
|
A real modem is an external modem that connects to the serial port, all the others are cheap software controlled ones designed for windows and although some can be made to work on linux its a pain to do so.

Dude
the NIC is the best hardware to use with Cable modems, Satellite Modems, ADSL Modems, and any other kind of networking hardware, really. Even with windows 95, windows 98, and windows 2000, USB modems are a problem. They will lockup the system, or win2k will just stop networking and have to be rebooted. I guarantee you the ethernet cable modem will not cause your system to lockup. I have been using one for years and it has never locked up. |
okay looks like i'll have to go out and buy an ethernet connection for my modem since it can do both usb and ethernet. anyway thanks all
|
okay i've found out that i need a new network adapter as my network adapter at the moment doesn't support ethernet. now i've got my christmas money i can buy a network card.
i've got suse 7.3, pentium 3 processor on a RM made machine. so which network adapter card do you recommend i buy. i will also be wanting to run windows on the internet so it must be a network adapter card which can run on both windows and linux. oh yeah, and of course i want it to have an ethernet connection. thanks |
oh yeah i think it also needs to be a 10 base-t whatever that means
|
here's a link to the suse hardware database, stick with the ones that say full compatability and you'll be fine.
