Linux instaling
 

I AM INTALLING linux to my computer and during hte inatalltion it gets to berkely c++ library (db3-3.3.11-6) and freezes and you can here disk stop moving ....i left it oon for a long time and then wen i came back it said soemthing like cant inatal package Dosftools-2.8-1 and it told me to reboot this was on the first disk anyone no how to help me ....also i had it set for eceything but kernel makin and laptop support an publishing. my comp oim tryin to install linux to his 512mb 1200 amd 128 9200 all in wonder vid card 9 meg maxtor hard drive

make sure it's a good burn of the cd image.

how do i do that and....... i intalled it fine 3 times but i unintalled and tryed to put on the server intead of workshop

sounds more and more like it's the power management having problems. when you initially boot the cd instead of jus hitting enter at boot look and see if it has something like press F1 for more options or somethign like that there should be an option to boot with acpi turned off. at least all the distros i've tried had somethign like that. if not google for that distro usually it's something like boot acpi=noacpi or acpi=off or something like that

which os are you trying to install?

Redhat Linux 7.3 downloaded and its full (3 disk)

if i'm not mistaken that's way old school. with the specs of your machine you should be able to run pretty much anything. personally i'm not familiar with red hat at all, but you might try centOS or fedora for a similar os that's more updated. a more updated distro may fix the problem more easily.

could i get the links for thoes...i wanted linux but i dont even know anything but redhat.... i wanted to host some stuff.... and ythis is all i could find can you get me a link to these and prob the most recent one

personally i'd start with Ubuntu or Suse or SimplyMEPIS because they are very noobie friendly and have great communities. SimplyMEPIS is cool because it is a Live CD that runs the entire OS off of the cd with a little icon on the desktop that says "Install Me" that launches a graphical installer that is really easy. it's based on Debian so it is really easy to install and tweak it.

Ubuntu has an amazing Guide that walks you step by step through setup of everything you could ever want.

Suse is made by Novell...in fact you can pick up a copy of Suse for about $60 at places like Best Buy which basically you're paying for Tech Support from Novell to get you going. they also have a good community.

if it weren't for these three distros i personally wouldn't be using linux today. i know everyone has a linux first distro conversion story that is different for each person. but this is what worked for me on similar hardware. remember trial and error is your friend. find the one that works best with your hardware and then tweak it to your heart's content to make it work exactly as you want it to.

so these are al linux's OS. and i dont want to buy i just want free stuff

and where do i get it ...plus will it be easy for a windows user?

all of these are true "linux" they are all free ubuntu is totally free simplymepis is the free version of mepis and suse has both free and commercial versions. you can download them for free and download all the software for them online also. ubuntu will even send you a free copy of the cd if you wait about 6 weeks but you can download them too.

i was gonna get Knoppix but it ran on cd...
so i ened up just gett SUSE Lol 5 disk rule (more stuff)

ubuntu you don't even have to pay for shipping. and like i said suse has more stuff out of the box but almost every linux distro can be customized to have similar setups some just require more downloads

well i got suse but it didnt work cuase my comp aint 64.bit how do i have foix that

should i get it x86 for 32?
