make sure it's a good burn of the cd image.
you may try booting with acpi turned off also.

bloodhawk1 03-16-2006 02:49 PM

There was an error installing dosftools2-8-1.
this can be a imediate failure, lack of disk space, and/or hardware problems.
This a fatal error and your install will be aborted.
Please verify your media and try your install again.

Press the OK button to reboot your system

thats what it told me.

you may try booting with acpi turned off also.
how do i do that and....... i intalled it fine 3 times but i unintalled and tryed to put on the server intead of workshop
and it crashed :(

truoc444 03-16-2006 03:01 PM

sounds more and more like it's the power management having problems. when you initially boot the cd instead of jus hitting enter at boot look and see if it has something like press F1 for more options or somethign like that there should be an option to boot with acpi turned off. at least all the distros i've tried had somethign like that. if not google for that distro usually it's something like boot acpi=noacpi or acpi=off or something like that

bloodhawk1 03-16-2006 03:37 PM

it sais....
To intall liniux in graphic mode
to enable low resolution
to disabvle frame buffer
to disable hardware probing
to test intall media
to enable recue mode
press F4 for more info on recue
if you have a driver disk....
F1-main
F2-General
F3-Kernal
F4-Recue
ps. whats a kernel

truoc444 03-16-2006 03:46 PM

which os are you trying to install?

bloodhawk1 03-16-2006 03:49 PM

Redhat Linux 7.3 downloaded and its full (3 disk)

truoc444 03-16-2006 03:52 PM

if i'm not mistaken that's way old school. with the specs of your machine you should be able to run pretty much anything. personally i'm not familiar with red hat at all, but you might try centOS or fedora for a similar os that's more updated. a more updated distro may fix the problem more easily.

bloodhawk1 03-16-2006 03:57 PM

could i get the links for thoes...i wanted linux but i dont even know anything but redhat.... i wanted to host some stuff.... and ythis is all i could find can you get me a link to these and prob the most recent one

truoc444 03-16-2006 04:09 PM

http://distrowatch.com is a good place to start it has lists of all of the major distros.

personally i'd start with Ubuntu or Suse or SimplyMEPIS because they are very noobie friendly and have great communities. SimplyMEPIS is cool because it is a Live CD that runs the entire OS off of the cd with a little icon on the desktop that says "Install Me" that launches a graphical installer that is really easy. it's based on Debian so it is really easy to install and tweak it.

Ubuntu has an amazing Guide that walks you step by step through setup of everything you could ever want.

Suse is made by Novell...in fact you can pick up a copy of Suse for about $60 at places like Best Buy which basically you're paying for Tech Support from Novell to get you going. they also have a good community.

if it weren't for these three distros i personally wouldn't be using linux today. i know everyone has a linux first distro conversion story that is different for each person. but this is what worked for me on similar hardware. remember trial and error is your friend. find the one that works best with your hardware and then tweak it to your heart's content to make it work exactly as you want it to.

so these are al linux's OS. and i dont want to buy i just want free stuff
i whats the BEST latest linux (accualy LINUX)
and where do i get it ...plus will it be easy for a windows user?

truoc444 03-16-2006 08:35 PM

all of these are true "linux" they are all free ubuntu is totally free simplymepis is the free version of mepis and suse has both free and commercial versions. you can download them for free and download all the software for them online also. ubuntu will even send you a free copy of the cd if you wait about 6 weeks but you can download them too.

bloodhawk1 03-16-2006 09:53 PM

a free cd or do i have to pay for shipping an cd?]
i was gonna get Knoppix but it ran on cd...
so i ened up just gett SUSE Lol 5 disk rule (more stuff)

truoc444 03-16-2006 11:40 PM

ubuntu you don't even have to pay for shipping. and like i said suse has more stuff out of the box but almost every linux distro can be customized to have similar setups some just require more downloads

bloodhawk1 03-17-2006 03:06 PM
