You can install over the parallel port but i can be a pain. Try

if i install linux on a hard drive and put that disk on the 386sx it will work?

Possibly. If you install a distro that isn't optimized for the 386, then the likelihood is that when you put the HD back into the old computer, it won't work. If you go with something like Slack, you could be OK, though, since it's 'optimized' for the 386 (I think), as is RH.
