Linux Home Sound Studio: Sweep software
 

Hello All,

I'm still busy trying to set up my home sound studio....I tried Audacity, but I couldn't get some of the parallel recording functionalities to work properly, so I found this other one that looks cool as well:

Have any of you used or have info, comments on Sweep Audio Editor?

Yes it looks pretty cool, but I can't get it to install under RH 8.0. You had any luck?? It says on their site it is installable and upgradable through apt-get rpm. I edited my apt list with the address given, did apt-get update then tried to install sweep and it won't do it! So what else is new :p

I've been trying to install a sound editor for some time now, and I can't seem to make any of them work! Audacity says it depends on libogg and libvorbis. I installed both, then when trying to install audacity it says it needs both when I just installed them! Quickedit complains about things I can't even begin to comprehend or locate on the internet!

Anybody out there using an easily inalled sound editor that will edit MP3? Did I actually say "easily installed" ??

Well, I must agree with you....installing these packages is no picnic.

I did manage to get Audacity going....I have SuSE and it comes with my distro, so I didn't have a lot of trouble installing it. It is missing a lot of plugins for linux so I don't know how far we can go with this, but so far I have been able to get it to do it's job.

Tried Ardour?

Ardour! I checked it out....loved it until I saw how the install worked....

Here's my situation. I need Linux software to edit mp3 files to eliminate silence at the beginning and end of some tracks. We are experimenting with downloading mp3's via gtk-gnutella, and playing them back on the air at a broadcast FM radio station. Xmms has a neat crossfade plugin that is very configurable and works fairly well, only it would work better if I could edit silence from some of the downloads for uniformity of crossfade. Cinelerra is pretty cool, but doesn't actually edit the mp3 file but rather creates an XML file that has to be in the same directory as the mp3 to provide the edit information. Ecasound seems to work the same way. gnusound won't edit mp3 neither will gnoise or ReZound. The ones I can get to compile won't edit mp3's and the ones I can't compile like Sweep, Audacity, and Quickedit say they will edit mp3.

Vous, I had Audacity working under Windows once, (pretty slick compiling eh..:) and if I remember correctly, it would convert the mp3 to wave before editing. Then if you wanted it mp3 again, you had to re- encode it. Is that right or am I remembering wrong? If that IS the way it works, is there sound degradation?

mhearn, does Ardour edit mp3's directly? Or is there a conversion to .wav or a creation of a seperate file that instructs how to edit in playback?

I sure wish we could download music in ogg vorbis!

Ardour is meant for pro audio work, in which uncompressed raw audio is the working format.

It sounds highly dodgy to me. You're sucking tracks of the peer-to-peer networks to play on an FM broadcast station? You realise that FM is far higher quality than mp3 right?

Check out Turn-Key Linux Audio. It has an easy install for Ardour and tons more nice audio editing/filtering progs.

We are an "Oldies" station so almost all of what we play can't match the quality of today's recordings anyway. I've been in radio for 22 years and have owned and operated an FM station for the past 13 so I've developed pretty good ears over the years. On air, I notice only minimal differences in sound quality between .wav's and decently sampled mp3's from songs that were recorded, say 25 or more years ago.
If I download a song that sounds crappy I won't play it. Most of what I've been getting out of gnutella has been pretty good though. This experiment is not to replace the music we are now playing from cd. It is only meant to augment our playlist with requested songs we don't have.

Any clues?

I haven't had a chance to work with mine yet. I am running Mandrake 9.1 on this machine (and I am thinking about reverting back to Mandrake 9.0 and Redhat 7.3 in it), so I am installing on my other one. After RTFM, I decided to re-partition and and install 9.0 and install Turn-Key on that box. I have a gig and other things coming up this weekend, so it will probably be Monday before I have more computer time available.

I've got Mandrake 9.0 on two boxes. I tried 9.1 on one and it seemed to me like it was a step back in the wrong direction! I had to run XF86config which I never had to do with 8.3 or 9.0, and it still had trouble giving me X. Once I got Xwindows straightened out, it was all down hill from there!

I quickly went back to my old flame, 9.0. ;)
